About Bitcoin
Bitcoin is a decentralized cryptocurrency which was described in a 2008 whitepaper by the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto. It was then released in January 2009 with the idea of allowing online payments to be sent directly from one party to another, without going through a financial institution. Bitcoin works with a decentralized ledger of transactions packaged in batches (blocks) and secured by cryptographic algorithms. This system would later be called ‘blockchain’.
Bitcoin has a unique advantage over other cryptocurrencies as they were the first to appear on the market. Bitcoin is seen as the ‘Gold Standard’ with all other coins being dubbed, ‘altcoins’.
